Palmer claims RX150 championship while Bakkerud wins at Grand Prix

12th October 2015

Former Formula Ford champion Chrissy Palmer produced a dominant performance in the eighth and final round of the MSA British Rallycross Championship in association with the Shannon Group at Croft Circuit, North Yorkshire to secure the RX150 championship title.

Fastest in all three heats, Palmer started on pole position for the A final and led from start to finish to secure the championship crown, ahead of double champion Marc Scott, who finished second having started on the outside of the front row. Round one winner Dave Bellerby completed the podium ahead of Stephen Jones, who secured third overall in the points standings.

“I think happy is a huge understand. We had a brilliant day. I had to get maximum points at Croft to beat Marc, and I went out and did it. Marc’s made it a very close year. We’ve had such good races. There’s no point having a championship where it isn’t hard a hard fight, it’s been really close and I want to defend this next year,” said Palmer. World Rallycross Championship star Andreas Bakkerud finished fifth, hampered by a misfiring engine while Former works Mitsubishi rally driver Ryan Champion and Jake Harris failed to finish the final.

RX150 Final Championship Standings

Supporting the MSA British Rallycross Grand Prix on Sunday, the RX150 category provided plenty of action. Bakkerud was fifth quickest in the opening heat of the day but struck back with a pair of fastest times in heats two and three to start on pole position for the final, from where he never looked back to score victory. Bellerby went one place better than on Saturday to finish second, while Champion fended off the attentions of Supercar racer Andy Scott, racing son Marc’s buggy, for the final podium spot.

“It took time to learn the buggy and I had some problems on the first day, but Sunday went really well. I had so much fun. I have to thank Ollie [O’Donovan] and the guys - it’s been a great experience. I know these buggies were used in the Race of Champions so knew they would be good,” said Bakkerud. “It was all about coming here and winning because Reinis [Nitiss] finished second when he drove the buggy at Lydden,” joked the Norwegian. Stephen Jones finished fifth with Richard Moore rounding out the top six.

RX150 Final Championship Standings

Championship coordinator Ollie O’Donovan was delighted for both Palmer and Bakkerud. “It’s great to have a new champion in RX150s. No disrespect all to Marc, but the best man on Saturday won. Chrissy drove a great event and delivered when it mattered. It’s great that Bakkerud was able to get a clean run on Sunday and he showed just what a professional he is. Together with Dave [Belleby], Andy [Scott] and Ryan [Champion] we had some guests with a lot of talent this weekend,” said O’Donovan.
