Tohill returns to Supercar with Team RX Racing at Mondello

Tohill returns to Supercar with Team RX Racing at Mondello

26th June 2015

Double FIA European Rallycross TouringCar Champion Derek Tohill will return to Supercar competition at the fourth and fifth rounds of the MSA British Rallycross Championship this weekend at Mondello Park.

The Irishman raced in the full FIA World Rallycross Championship last season in a Citroen DS3, finishing 14th overall and will race the Team RX Racing Ford Focus this weekend.

“There’s nothing quite like a rallycross Supercar. I’ve driven in rallycross once since the final round of WorldRX in Argentina last November. That was in my Fiesta TouringCar. I got my hunger back then, but I want to be back in a four-wheel drive car,” said Tohill.

“Ollie made an offer for me to drive the Focus, it didn’t take long to sort out the details. I haven’t driven at Mondello in about three years, but I want to drive a Supercar with a longitudinal engine to see how the balance feels and I want to drive a Supercar in Ireland. This is probably the biggest event we’ve had here in ten years. I want to be in the mix and we’re working hard towards something more permanent for next year so it’s important to keep my hand in. It’s going to be fun - the most important thing is that we enjoy ourselves and try to help Ollie in the championship.”

Team RX Racing team principle Ollie O’Donovan is pleased to have Tohill in the team this weekend, and thinks he will be right on the pace. “It’s great to see Derek back on the start line here at Mondello. It’s his home track and if anybody knows their way around, it should be Derek. The car is very competitive and I’ve got to watch myself tomorrow, if I have any little slip-ups then I think Derek will be right there. We’ve got 13 Supercars here, anybody could win here but I really need wins myself to get my championship back on track,” he said.

Also running under the Team RX Racing banner at Mondello Park in the Supercar category will be the Mitsubishi Evo X of Steve Hill and Geoffrey Dolan’s Opel Astra.
