5 Nations BRX set for 2WD Superprix at Lydden Hill with BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross
For the first time since the 2012 season, the Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy and BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Rallycross Championship run at the same circuit on the same day at Lydden Hill this weekend [August 17].
The brand-new 2WD Superprix brings together the best of the two-wheel-drive contenders from both championships for a single-day mid-season event, and with several of the classes in both series running to similar regulations, many of the categories have been amalgamed to keep the action exciting through the day, with points awarded by the respective series at the conclusion of the action.
With the headline 5 Nations BRX Supercar division not in attendance, the headline act for the 2WD Superprix is the Supernational and BTRDA Super Modified amalgamated category. Within the 5 Nations BRX roster, former champion Jason Bleasdale leads the standings following three wins from four rounds at Lydden Hill and Mondello Park so far this year, but it was his brother Darren Bleasdale, driving a similar car, who claimed the victory spoils in round two. Martin Hawkes returns to the fold with the engine rebuilt in his own VX220 he debuted at Mondello Park, while brother Andrew races a BMW Mini. Also in the front-wheel-drive brigade, Lydden Hill regulars, Belgian Dave Van Beers (Renault Clio), Darren Scott (Citroen C2) and Fred Ling (Ford Fiesta) will be in the victory hunt.
Reigning champion Tyler McAlpin leads the Motorsport UK Junior Rallycross Championship standings following the Junior drivers’ appearance at the successful Lydden Legend Festival last month, while Tighe Wratten and Benjamin Bartlett are also both winners at Lydden Hill in the series so far this season. Cayden Harris sits third in the standings after a strong start to the season, while Kenyan Amaan Ganatra joins the nine-car 5 Nations BRX Junior RX fold.
In the Retro Rallycross Championship, newcomer Charlie French (Ford Escort) leads the Super Retro order following wins at Lydden Hill and Mondello Park, chased in the standings by Pat Doran (Ford Escort), the four-time British RX (Supercar) champion having claimed his first Retro victory last time out at Mondello Park in round four. Allan Tapscott, also driving a Ford Escort, lies third in the points. Stuart Emery (Volvo 242), Ray Morgan (Ford Escort), John Cross (Lancia Stratos) Lee Wood (Ford Fiesta) and Barry Stewart (Porsche 911) will also join the hunt for victory as part of a stacked entry. Former champion Tony Lynch (Toyota MR2) makes his first competitive Lydden Hill start for 2024 in the Retro Rallycross division for up to 1600cc cars.
Supercar star Tristan Ovenden makes his debut in the RX150 Rallycross Championship, taking on former champions Stephen Jones and Ben Hardy, while event-winner Nick Priddy returns to the grid for the first time this season. In the new-for-2024 FIA Cross Car category that runs together with RX150 this year, event-winners Richard Rees and Max Weatherly are joined by Will Butler and Ethan Rouse.
Former Esports ace Wesley Wickens returns to the scene of his maiden 5 Nations BRX BMW Mini victory at the top of the order, chased by Mondello Park winner Abbie McGuinness and Lydden victor Leigh-Anne Sedgwick in the standings. James Hawkes, Michael Amlin and Mark Finch will be in podium contention.
Junior RX graduate Will Ovenden leads the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship, in which Chris Cake and Andrew Sage return, while Scott Parker joins the grid having taken part in one of the Swift Series’ experience days at Lydden Hill, and former Minicross racer Naftali Ayieko makes his Swift Sport debut.
