Godfrey claims second British RX victory of 2017 at Mondello Park

22nd July 2017

Julian Godfrey (Ford Fiesta) won the fourth round of the Toyo Tires MSA British Rallycross Championship at Mondello Park to close the gap to points leader Oliver Bennett (Ford Fiesta) (July 22).

Godfrey started in the middle of the front row in the final, and having taken his joker on lap one, he passed Steve Hill (Mitsubishi Evo) in the first corner of lap two. Ollie O’Donovan (Ford Fiesta) started on pole position, he led in the opening laps but dropped to third behind Derek Tohill (Ford Fiesta) and Godfrey when he took his joker on lap four.

Godfrey moved into the lead when Tohill took his joker lap, and fended off pressure from O’Donovan until the end of the race. Irish Rallycross Championship driver Tohill finished third on track, but third of the British RX points was points leader Oliver Bennett (Ford Fiesta), who fought through the field from the back of the grid. Kevin Procter (Ford Fiesta), Hill, Jake Harris (Citroen DS3) and Pat Doran (Citroen DS3) completed the list of Supercar finishers.

Reigning champion Tony Lynch (Ford KA) won the MSA Supernational Rallycross Championship final, taking his joker early in the race and passing Tristan Oveden (Renault Clio) when the race leader took his joker. Points leader Paige Bellerby (Lotus Exige) was third British RX finisher, having spun at the first corner following contact with Lynch. Norwegian Ole Henry Steinsholt ended Tom Llewellin’s unbeaten run in the MSA Junior Rallycross Championship by dominating the event. Llewellin was second with Tom Constantine third.

Marc Scott won the RX150 Championship final, Rob Shield claimed Swift Sport Rallycross Championship victory and Paul Coney won the Super1600 Rallycross Championship final. Drew Bellerby took top honours in the BMW Mini Rallycross Championship category for the second event in a row.
