Kane, French and Swayland claim 2WD Superprix wins at Lydden Hill

6th September 2025

For the second year in a row, Lydden Hill, the ‘Home of Rallycross’ hosted the 2WD Superprix, where competitors from the Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy two-wheel drive roster and BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross Championship combined for a thrilling day of action [September 6].

The most competitive racing of the weekend and arguably season-so-far was witnessed by spectators trackside and online via the live broadcast, and it was David Kane who stormed to victory in the ninth round of the Motorsport UK Cross Car Championship.

Fastest in every qualifying heat within the 17-strong entry, Speedcar Wonder driver Kane qualified on pole position for the final by virtue of winning the first semi-final, the led the final from the front to secure his second win in a row.

Behind, the battle for the remaining podium positions raged throughout the race, with Liam McMullan (Speedcar Wonder) initially holding second on the opening lap ahead of Benjamin Bartlett (Mygale XC04). From fourth, Will Ovenden (Mygale XC04) took a first lap joker, while championship leader Max Weatherley (LifeLive TN11) spun at the jump landing on the second tour.

Former Supercar event-winner Roberts Vitols (LifeLive TN11) climbed two positions on the second lap, passing Bartlett and McMullan for second. As McMullan dropped out of the battle for the podium, Bartlett took his joker, and on the last lap battled hard with Ovenden for third on track, while Vitols ahead took his compulsory extra route, the Latvian dashing to the line to split the pair for the final podium spot, the trio split by 0.24s at the finish with Ovenden finishing second.

McMullan finished fifth behind Bartlett, with Bradley Turner (LifeLive TN11) in sixth.

Super Retro Rallycross Championship

Title-protagonists Alan Crockett (Opel Kadett) and Charlie French (Ford Escort) continued their season-long battle at the front of the Super Retro Rallycross Championship and it was French who qualified top after the heats.

But, Crockett, having qualified third, then beat French in Semi-Final One to secure pole for the final, then led from the front in the finale. Meanwhile, fellow front-row starter Lee Wood (Ford Escort) lost ground with a poor launch, while French also lost time with a failed outside move on Crockett in turn one, but was soon back on the tail of his main rival.

Piling on the pressure, French made a move for the lead stick on lap two and never looked back. Crockett continued to challenge until the closing stages, when an issue caused him to slow, the Kadett driver overtaken by Pat Doran (Ford Escort) and a recovering Wood for second and third. Former champion Ray Morgan (Ford Escort) finished fifth, with Vince Bristow (BMW E36) sixth.

Retro Rallycross Championship

Reigning champion Dan Swayland (Ford Escort) simply dominated the fifth round of the Retro Rallycross Championship category for up to 1600cc machines to extend his margin at the head of the standings and move closer to defending his crown. Swayland overcame a broken exhaust in Q2 to start the final from the front of the grid, made the best start and run clear out front to score his fourth win of the campaign. Tony Lynch (Peugeot 205) finished second in the car he previously won Stock Hatch titles with, while former champion Simon Hart (Ford Escort) completed the podium. Ian Halfhide (Peugeot 205) overcame a half-spin in the final to finish fourth, just ahead of newcomer Peter Christmas (Toyota Corolla), on his debut. 2025 newcomer Joe Luke-Eastwood’s event was cut short by a big roll at Paddock Bend in Q2 that meant he could go no further.
