French leads competitive Super Retro order into Mondello double-header
Reigning champion Charlie French leads the Super Retro Rallycross Championship standings with four rounds to go of the 2025 campaign, heading to Mondello Park this weekend [October 4-5].
French’s championship defence was dealt an early blow in the opening double-header at Lydden Hill on Easter Bank Holiday weekend, Alan Crockett (Opel Kadett) twice taking the spoils in the category for period machinery.
But, it was Ford Escort driver French who twice claimed victory over Crockett at Pembrey in Wales in the summer after another bout of fantastic racing at the front of the order, which continued into round five at Lydden Hill last month, only for Crockett’s title hopes to be hit in the final, when damaged steering cost him positions and another victory for French allowed the Englishman to take control in the standings.
Consistency has been key for BMW racer Vince Bristow so far through 2025, who heads to Mondello third in the standings, while four-time British Rallycross Champion Pat Doran (Ford Escort) claimed his best result of the season at Lydden last time out, with second, having claimed a maiden Super Retro victory at Mondello last season.
Tied on points with Doran, fellow Devon resident Allan Tapscott (Ford Escort) is one of the most experienced drivers in the field and is in the thick of a fight for the top three overall, along with Stuart Emery. Having delivered a strong performance last time out at Lydden and been on the podium in round two of the season, Volvo 242 driver Emery is just five points behind Doran and Tapscott and is well in the fight to end the year on a high. David Ewin also joins the Super Retro field for the Irish weekend with his venerable rear-wheel-drive Ford Fiesta Evo.
The Mondello Park circuit will utilise a different layout on each of the two days this weekend. Tickets to attend the event are available here, while all of the action will be broadcast live on the 5 Nations BRX Facebook page and YouTube channel.
