New-look Mondello Park set to host 5 Nations BRX Irish double-header
A brand-new layout awaits Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy competitors at Mondello Park in Ireland this weekend [May 23-24] as the series joins the Irish Rallycross Championship for a double-header of action.
The Naas circuit has heavily-revised its layout for the annual May event, with the start line area relocated, the circuit run in anti-clockwise direction and new sections of track used as part of the changes.
Entering the weekend on the back of a maiden victory in the French Rallycross Championship earlier this month, reigning British Rallycross Champion Derek Tohill (Peugeot 208 WRX) will be challenging for points in both the 5 Nations BRX and Irish RX series this weekend, aiming to build on his maximum points haul from the opening weekend of the campaign at Lydden Hill, on Easter Bank Holiday weekend.
Within 10 Supercars contesting the Irish event, Murray Motorsport driver John McCluskey (Honda Civic Coupe) was Tohill’s closest challenge in the opening bow of the campaign and following victory in the Irish Rallycross Championship at Mondello Park earlier this year, will be targeting a strong performance at home.
Six-time British Champion Julian Godfrey (Citroen DS3) sits third in the standings, while Tristan Ovenden (Volkswagen Polo) will be hoping for better fortune than his maiden outing with the new-to-him car at Lydden Hill, having been forced out after the opening day with technical troubles. However, the former Mondello Park event-winner did salvage a podium with his Citroen DS3 the following day, and sits fourth in the standings, just five points off second. Meanwhile, George Tracey (Citroen C4) makes his first start of the season at his home circuit.
Bradley Turner (LifeLive TN11) leads the Motorsport UK Cross Car Championship order after the opening three rounds of the campaign for the single-seater machines, while James Constantine (LifeLive TN11) sits second in the points. With a podium each to their names so far in 2026, fellow Junior rallycross graduates Will Ovenden (Mygale XC01) and Teddie Macpherson (LifeLive TN11) will both have eyes on climbing the points chart in Ireland. The Cross Cars will be joined on track by RX150 contingent Stephen Jones and Ben Hardy.
Double Lydden Hill victor and Motorsport UK Cross Car Junior Championship leader Ethan Hooker (Lifelive TN5) and round one winner Phoebe Cake (LifeLive TN11) will battle for honours in the Junior division.
Four-time British Rallycross Champion Pat Doran (Ford Escort MKII) won the second round of the Super Retro Rallycross Championship at Lydden Hill and heads the standings. He will be joined on the grid in Ireland this weekend by an eclectic range of cars, including Dan Swayland (Ford Escort MKI), his title-winning machine now fully converted to Super Retro specification, the reigning Retro Rallycross Champion having campaigned a borrowed car for the season-opener, and sits third in the points. Stuart Emery (Volvo 242), Allan Tapscott (Ford Escort MKII) and Vincent Bristow (BMW E36) will all have eyes on strong results, while the class welcomes Northern Irishman David Crockett (Vauxhall Chevette HSR) back into the fold.
In the Retro Rallycross class for up to 1600cc machines, championship leader Jon Wood (Ford Escort) will face a challenge from Ian Biagi (BMC Mini) and Tony Lynch (Peugeot 205).
The single-make Swift Sport Rallycross Championship features an international flavour with European Rallycross Championship protagonists Nils Volland (Germany), Haotian Deng (China) and Nicolas Geleyns (Antigua) all taking part in preparation for Mondello Park’s Euro RX return in July, while regular racer Phil Seath will be hoping to continue his run of podiums in 2026.
