A new Open 2WD category will be introduced into the Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy structure from 2027, with a showcase round to be included in the 2026 finale at Lydden Hill in November.

An evolution of the historic rallycross ethos of allowing a wide range of machinery and innovation, Open 2WD, a concept similar to that of Super Modified in the UK, has been growing in Europe and especially Scandinavia in recent years.

Following feedback from a range of competitors, 5 Nations BRX will adopt Open 2WD regulations in line with the RallyX and Irish Rallycross Championship series, to give a cover-all home to two-wheel-drive machinery.

Cars eligible will be from the most modified in the two-wheel-drive sphere to more production-based cars and everything in between, driven by either the front or rear axle.

Engine capacity and driven-axle prizes and titles will be awarded within the category, but the main focus on the overall picture.

A non-championship event for the new class will be held at the annual Lydden Hill fireworks season-finale on November 7-8, with 12 competitors already committed to take part, including a number of the headline two-wheel-drive competitors from the UK and Ireland.

As a non-championship round, tyres for the November showcase event will be open, while the calendar and specific regulations for the 2027 championship will be released later this year.
