Godfrey targets seventh 5 Nations BRX crown with revised DS3
Six-time British Rallycross Champion Julian Godfrey hopes winter effort will pay off as he targets a record-breaking seventh crown in the Motorsport UK British Rallycross Championship 5 Nations Trophy this year.
Engineer-turned-driver Godfrey switched from his venerable Ford Fiesta Supercar to an ex-LD Motorsports Citroen DS3, that car known by its creators as 002, for 2023, Godfrey having sampled the machine previously for a one-off event at Knockhill in 2021.
But, while Godfrey showed flashes of pace, he didn’t regularly trouble the front of the order, his season also hampered by a substantial roll in the Irish weekend of the campaign at Mondello Park.
But, from his workshops in Heathfield, East Sussex, 23-time British Rallycross Championship event-winner and winner of the Belgian European Rallycross Championship round in 2011 (in Super1600), Godfrey has worked hard on improving the DS3’s reliability, and is in a positive mood heading to the opening rounds of the campaign at Lydden Hill on Easter Weekend.
Julian Godfrey:
“Last year didn’t go as planned. We had some good speed, but the reliability really wasn’t there. I got the car late and didn’t have the time to do things as I normally would. Over the winter I have put a lot of time into the car, and I’m looking forward to Lydden. Mondello didn’t go very well for us last season in the end but I like going there, so hopefully we can have a good start to the year. There are a lot of quick cars and drivers, it’s good to have some Irish drivers returning so the competition will be hard but I would really like to win another title.”
5 Nations BRX runs across 10 rounds in 2024 with events at Lydden Hill, Mondello Park (Ireland) and Pembrey (South Wales). The opening two rounds take place at Lydden Hill on Easter Bank Holiday Weekend (Mar 30 - April 1).
