    Tohill runs strongly in Kouvola World Rallycross

    The LD Motorsports World RX Team enjoyed a successful two day's of racing at the fourth round of the FIA World Rallycross Championship, hosted in Kouvola, last weekend.

    Irish rallycross star, and former double European Touring car champion, Derek Tohill showed a marked increase in pace throughout the weekend, and finished the eighth overall in the final classification.

    I was relishing the trek up to Knockhill. It’s a mammoth journey, but some of the scenery is lovely – even from the various motorways you have to trudge for hours. My particular favourite part is between Carlisle and Glasgow. The motorway weaves its way through rolling, deserted hills, with wind turbines aplenty, mist and rain adding to the drama.

    But enough of the romance of the road trip. This year, I was accompanied by a young motorsport student, Jason Chidwick who is studying at Canterbury College but desperate to get to as many race events as possible to marshal, if possible. So having hooked up with him back at Lydden, we’d laid plans for me to pick him up.

    Rallycross the winner at Lydden Hill

    Britain’s first ever round of the breathtaking new FIA World Rallycross Championship has been hailed as a massive success by all involved in last weekend’s historic event at the famous Lydden Hill circuit (24-25 June).

    The landmark AUTOSPORT World RX of Great Britain attracted a record entry of 38 fearsome Supercars in the headline class for powerful 600bhp machines and drew a massive bank holiday crowd totaling more than 10,000 spectators. Moreover, Lydden’s biggest rallycross attendance in living memory was treated to two memorable days of sensational high-octane entertainment as Norwegian ace Andreas Bakkerud overcame a star-studded field of proven champions to win a dramatic grand final. With impressive ‘wild card’ entry Andrew Jordan also battling his way to podium glory, there was plenty of excitement for the local fans, too.

    Bakkerud takes the win as Jordan is top Brit at Lydden

    Andreas Bakkerud won the inaugural AUTOSPORT World RX after a thrilling Supercar final in front of a huge bank holiday crowd of more than 10,000 at Lydden Hill in Kent.

    With victory, the 23-year-old Norwegian made motor sport history as the first ever winner of a round of the new FIA World Rallycross Championship staged on British soil. Rallycross’ graduation to world championship status comes nearly 50 years after the spectacular hybrid sport which mixes the best of racing and rallying was born at Lydden in 1967.

    World Championship heats up at Lydden

    The AUTOSPORT World RX of Great Britain, round two of the FIA World Rallycross Championship presented by Monster Energy, got underway at Lydden Hill Race Circuit today with Andreas Bakkerud heading the field after the first run of heats.

    Two Supercar heats for each driver, totalling 16 contests across an action-packed day, were held in mixed conditions as bright sunshine and heavy rain took turns to show their hand.
